I'm so lucky to have a job making video games, especially at a studio where I have so much creative freedom but originally i had plans to become an illustrator doing editorial illustrations and things like that. They hired me full-time right after graduation in 2009 and I've been there ever since. Since then we've been concentrating on consoles and polished downloadable games for Steam.Ī friend of mine at XGen got me a job as an artist intern between my 3rd and 4th year at an art college. During the production of the low road Skye passed away suddenly and we've had to adapt to some new roles and sorta figure out this business on our own.įor many years XGen Studios was able to fund game development through hosting ads on our flash portal, but we had to shift our business to downloadable titles when ad revenue started to tail off industry wide. We're now a team of about 9 ish, some full time, some part time, and some contract workers. He then was able to grow the business and add additional employees. He put together a trio of games that almost immediately picked up a cult following online. XGen was founded in 2001 in Skye's parent's basement. I was pretty addicted to Boxhead: The Zombie Wars! At the moment we're pretty proud of what we've been able to accomplish ourselves though, and staying independent has given us a lot of freedom to make the kind of games we're interested in. We've considered publishing deals in the past, and would be open to it in the future if the right one comes along. has that nice "just one more round" hook that keeps me up wayyy too late. I'm so bad at it but it's just so well designed and addictive. You see a lot of 1980s inspired games, but not a lot from the 70s, so we thought it would be a cool way to stand out. The 1970s has a huge visual language to draw from and we didn't see too many games tapping into it. I specifically remember there being a demolition derby minigame which kinda blew my mind. It was the first game I ever beat as a child and I have fond memories of playing that game alongside a friend of mine. ![]() Though I wasn't around XGen for the creation of those, I recall hearing a rumour that we sold a lot of padded mouse pads for sore wrists via advertisements on that game! Haha, for that alone I say DYC. Of the original 3 I think my favourite must be Defend Your Castle. Cheers guys, I'm looking forward to a bright future for XGen!! I wasn't sure if it was better to post these individually or lump them. What are your all time favorite Flash games not made by XGen?
